TRIBUNNEWS.COM - Siswa SMA/MA Kelas 12 kini memasuki Unit 1 dalam buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut Kurikulum Merdeka, yang disusun oleh Sunengsih, dkk dan diterbitkan oleh Kemdikbudristek pada tahun 2022.

Salah satu materi menarik dalam unit ini adalah cerita rakyat berjudul “The Story of Bujang Beji and Bukit Kelam”, yang mengangkat legenda dari Sintang, Kalimantan Barat. 

Cerita ini tidak hanya memperkenalkan kekayaan budaya lokal, tetapi juga mengajak siswa untuk memahami nilai moral dan konsekuensi dari sifat serakah serta iri hati.

Melalui pendekatan berbasis teks naratif, siswa diajak untuk menganalisis karakter tokoh, alur cerita, hingga pesan moral yang terkandung dalam cerita. 

Aktivitas ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca kritis, memahami struktur teks, serta menyampaikan gagasan utama dan gagasan pendukung secara terstruktur.

Pada halaman 12, siswa akan mengerjakan Activity B.4, yaitu tugas berpasangan untuk mengidentifikasi main idea dan supporting ideas dari setiap paragraf dalam cerita. 

Sebagai panduan, paragraf pertama telah diberikan sebagai contoh.

Aktivitas ini tidak hanya melatih kemampuan literasi bahasa Inggris, tetapi juga menanamkan nilai-nilai kebijaksanaan dalam menjaga lingkungan serta pentingnya etika dalam bersaing. 

Tokoh Tumenggung Marubai yang bijak dan bersahabat menjadi kontras dari Bujang Beji yang tamak dan licik, sehingga memudahkan siswa dalam mengenali nilai moral dari cerita tersebut.

Sebelum melihat kunci jawaban, sangat dianjurkan agar siswa menjawab berdasarkan pemahaman pribadi terlebih dahulu.

Read the story again, identify the main idea and the supporting idea from each paragraph. Paragraph 1 has been done for you.

1. Paragraph: 1

Main Idea: In the past, there lived two leaders named Bujang Beji and Tumenggung Marubai.

Supporting Idea: These two people had very contradictory natures. Tumenggung Marubai was a kind person and not arrogant. Meanwhile, Bujang Beji was a magical person, but greedy and arrogant. Both had livelihoods as fish hunters and had territories of their own. Tumenggung Marubai and his followers were looking for fish in Simpang Melawi River, while Bujang beji was Simpang 

2. Paragraph: 2

Main Idea: The Simpang Melawi River region had many types of fish, more than the fish in Simpang Kapuas Rive

Supporting Idea: Therefore the catch of Tumenggung Marubai was always more than Bujang Beji. Tumenggung Melawi used traps or a kind of large trap to catch fish. Once collected in the trap, he only selected the big fish, while the small fish were released back so that the fish in Simpang Melawi River always bred and never ran out.

3. Paragraph: 3

Main Idea: Seeing the capture of Tumenggung Marubai, Bujang Beji felt envious.

Supporting Idea: He also looked for a way to defeat Tumenggung Melawi. Then, he went the wrong way. He began to catch fish by menuba, which was to poison the fish with tuba, a kind of fish poison from the roots of very intoxicating forest plants. At first, he got a lot of fish, more from the catch of Tumenggung Marubai. However, because the method used was to kill the fish with poison, over time the fish in Simpang Kapuas became greatly reduced. Meanwhile, Tumenggung Marubai still got a lot of catches. This made Bujang Beji even more jealous.

4. Paragraph: 4

Main Idea: Bujang Beji meant to use the top of Batu Hill in Nanga Silat, Kapuas Hulu to block the Melawi River.

Supporting Idea: With his magic, he cut the top of Batu Hill and brought it with seven leaves of weeds. While carrying the stone hill, he suddenly heard the sound of girls laughing at him. They were the goddesses of the heavenly realm. When he reached the intersection between Kapuas and Malawi, Bujang Beji looked up to see who was laughing at him. Inadvertently, his foot stepped on the poisonous thorn until he jumped up and screamed in pain. As a result, seven sheets of weed leaves he was wearing were cut off. The top of the rock hill also fell into a river called jetak.

5. Paragraph: 5

Main Idea: Bujang Beji tried to lift Batu Hill that had been submerged in the jetty by digging it up using an elongated hill

Supporting Idea: However, because the rock hill was already attached to the jetty, the effort was unsuccessful. The elongated hill was broken. The fracture is now called Liut Hill. Thus, Bujang Beji’s attempt to close the Melawi River failed. All because of the goddesses of heaven. “I will take revenge,” said Bujang Beji.

6. Paragraph: 6

Main Idea: Bujang Benji planned to reach the land of heaven by using the kumpang mambu tree, which is a kind of giant wooden tree whose end rises to the sky

Supporting Idea: He started planting a scented tree. In just a few days the tree had grown so tall that the top was invisible to the naked eye. Before climbing kumpang mambu, Bujang Beji performed a traditional ritual, which was to give offerings to the subtle spirits and animals around him so as not to interfere with his efforts to reach the land of heaven. However, there were two types of animals that Bujang Beji forgot to offer, they were a group of termites and bears

7. Paragraph: 7

Main Idea: When Bujang Beji started climbing the kumpang mambu tree, a swarm of termites and bears came to attack and gnawed on the tree at the bottom until the tree was cut off.

Supporting Idea: At that time, Bujang Beji had almost reached the land of heaven. He fell to the ground and died instantly. Thus, Bujang Beji’s attempt to harm the goddesses of heaven also failed. Tumenggung Marubai was spared from Bujang Beji’s evil intentions.

8. Paragraph: 8

Main Idea: Meanwhile, the peak of Nanga Silat Hill that escaped from Bujang Beji’s blow turned into Kelam Hill.

Supporting Idea: Now Kelam Hill has become one of the tourist attractions in the Sintang area, West Kalimantan, and has become a tourist forest area with a very beautiful view
