Di halaman 244, siswa belajar contoh kalimat untuk menyampaikan opini dalam bahasa Inggris pada Section 4 - Language Focus di Chapter 5 Embrace Yourself, Unit 1. Be Yourself.

Ada ekspresi yang diawali dengan "I", misalnya I think.. , I believe.. , I am sure.. .

Contoh lain misalnya, in my view.. , in my opinion.. , according to me.. , from my point of view .. .

Setelah belajar materi ekspresi tersebut, pada halaman 245, terdapat tugas melengkapi kalimat opini berdasarkan situasi yang tercantum di tabel.

Siswa diminta mengerjakan soal tersebut berdasarkan pendapat masing-masing.

Kunci jawaban hanya digunakan oleh orang tua/wali/guru untuk memandu proses belajar siswa, setelah siswa mengerjakan semua soal secara mandiri.

Learning to express opinions

Expressing opinions is important in a discussion. It is a skill that we can use to argue our position on issues, such as whether or not to wear makeup, or just to express simple likes and dislikes about ideas such as hobbies, favorite food, and games. There are many useful phrases to express opinions. Some of the most common expressions are:

• Expressing opinions with ‘I’:
  1. I think (that) ....
  2. Personally, I think (that) ....
  3. I believe (that) ....
  4. I am sure (that)....
• Other expressions:
  1. In my view… 
  2. In my opinion… 
  3. According to me… 
  4. From my point of view…

We can use the expressions in Table 5.1 to express our opinions. Have a look at the following examples:

• I think swimming helps you to stay healthy.
• I believe English is easy to learn.
• I’m sure that Galang will win the game.
• In my opinion, swimming helps you to stay healthy.
• In my opinion, English is easy to learn.
• From my point of view, Galang will win the game.

Now try to do the following practice exercise about giving opinions with the situations given.

Answer:

1. Situations: Watching Korean drama
   Opinions: Personally, I think .. watching Korean drama is very entertaining and relaxing.
2. Situations: Using social media
   Opinions: In my opinion, .. using social media is useful for staying connected with friends and getting information.
3. Situations: Wearing whitening beauty products
   Opinions: I believe that .. wearing whitening beauty products should be done carefully to avoid skin problems.
4. Situations: Playing online games
   Opinions: From my point of view, .. playing online games can be fun, but it should be limited.
5. Situations: Having acne breakouts
   Opinions: I am sure .. having acne breakouts can affect someone’s confidence, but it can be treated with proper care.
